Gummy smile also known as “gingival smile” or “excessive gingival display” refers to a condition in which there is a show of the anterior gingiva above the teeth when smiling. In most cases gummy smile sufferers see more of their teeth and less of their gums when they smile or even talk. The gumminess in the smile is often a combination of the amount of gum tissue display, the size and shape of the teeth, the length and the degree of movement of the upper lip and the vertical position of the upper jaw and teeth in relationship to the skull. Actually, a gummy smile is not the worst aesthetic problem anybody can have. But gummy smile sufferers are very self-conscious about showing the extreme gum exposure when they smile. This can cause them to hide their mouth or even stop smiling to the point where it affects what others think of them. ==Causes== There are several possible causes of gummy smile. Among them include: * Having teeth that erupted abnormally * Having teeth that appear too short * Having an upper jaw bone that developed abnormally and bulged out excessively * When the muscles responsible for moving the upper lip are over-active * When the shape and size of the lips are huge * When the shape and size of the teeth are big An attractive smile is one where minimal gum tissue is revealed. The gums surrounding the teeth will ideally look balanced and the contours should work in harmony with the shape of the teeth.
